• Reviews, studies and researches laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities.
• Prepares legal memoranda, statement of issues involved and proposed orders, including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge.
• Compiles references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations.
• Confers with judge concerning legal questions, construction of documents and granting of orders.
• Attends court sessions to hear oral arguments.
• Prepares and summarizes case files in advance of hearings and monitors cases under advisement.
• Prepares jury instructions and verdict forms.
• Responds to phone calls and written inquiries from public and attorneys.

Typical Qualifications
• Graduation from an accredited law school and possession of a Juris Doctorate.
• Knowledge of general law, state law, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.
• Knowledge of court practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of legal terminology and concepts.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of people, including attorneys and pro se parties.
• Ability to research complex legal problems or questions and apply legal principles.
• Ability to represent the court in a respectful manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Familiarity with Microsoft products, including legal research software is preferred.

Expand your court experience or begin your legal career as a District Court Law Clerk! Law Clerk positions are staffed in all seven counties of the First Judicial District, including Carver, Dakota, Le Sueur, McLeod, Scott and Sibley.

The First Judicial District currently has the following Law Clerk openings:

Honorable David Knutson - Dakota County

Honorable Jessica Maher - McLeod County

A Judicial Law Clerk position offers the opportunity to work within the Minnesota Judicial Branch at the Trial Court level, and gain insight into judicial and court processes, with a court perspective on the administration of justice. Judicial Law Clerks work directly with a District Court Judge performing legal research and drafting memoranda and orders.

Use your legal research and writing skills, work as part of a judge team, and observe all types of court calendars and proceedings. The First Judicial District operates on a daily calendar system. Law Clerks have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments and observe many different types of court proceedings.

The First Judicial District accepts applications for the law clerk position on an on-going basis. Judges who experience a law clerk vacancy are provided access to all current applications on file. Positions are typically filled quickly from the pool of applicants. Applications will remain active for 60 days.
