Required Skills:
Post-secondary education or significant work experience in college security, law enforcement or criminal justice.
Experience in security, training and fire safety; experience in college security preferred.
Valid vehicle operators license (Minnesota-class D)

Must pass criminal background investigation and drug testing.
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including periods of prolonged walking, standing, and occasional running.
Ability to handle a variety of situations with calm and authority, and move from highly stressful situations to routine contact while maintaining outward calm and control.
Available to work rotating shifts and overtime as required, including regular weekend assignments

Job Description:
The Department of Life Safety Services at Saint John's University (SJU) invites applications for the full-time benefit eligible position of Life Safety Sergeant. This position is for the evening shift from 4pm - 2am, with alternating weekends. The Life Safety department is charged with providing a safe campus environment for students, monastics and visitors of the SJU community. Life Safety Services consists of 9 full-time staff, 7 part-time officers and 23 student officers and provides security services as well as emergency response to all four branches of the O.S.B. campus including Saint John's Preparatory School, The Liturgical Press, Saint John's University, and Saint John's Abbey.

The Sergeant reports to the Director of Life Safety Services and serves in a leadership role that is responsible for supporting the overall supervision of the personnel of Life Safety Services. The Sergeant serves in a supervisory role in the development of training for patrol officers, the education of students and employees on safety practices, investigation of criminal and policy incidents and the response to emergency and crisis situations. The Sergeant is responsible for patrolling campus areas as assigned and attend to matters of security (law enforcement), traffic control, general health and safety of all members of the Saint John’s community.

Primary Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and supervision to Life Safety staff and are required to be on-call 24/7.
Develop educational outreach programs with an emphasis towards employees that centers around personal safety, property protection and community involvement in law enforcement.
Serve as a member on the leadership team to strategize and plan for large campus events and has the responsibility for plan implementation.
Coordinate security and parking arrangements for all university and Order of St. Benedict conferences, events, liturgies and student activities.
Train all staff and volunteers on protocols for patrol procedures, response to medical incidents, sexual assaults, emergencies, disasters and deaths.
Inspect the operation and performance of all emergency, safety and rescue equipment.
Exercise independent discretion in purchasing equipment for officers. Inspect officer’s uniforms and equipment necessary to perform their duties.
Overall supervision, hiring, evaluating, scheduling and training of student officers. Hire new officers and evaluate current officers for performance appraisals.
Schedule and approve vacations, sick days, etc., while coordinating regular and special event shift coverage.
Be available to Life Safety personnel 24/7 ensuring that all shifts are covered as defined by department standards.
Research, recommend and support the development of planning, goal setting, budgeting and program evaluation.
Provide supervision of Life Safety personnel in the absence of the Director of Life Safety Services.
Supervise the administration and organization of evidence room.
Oversee campus safety and security on assigned shifts, providing direction to officers and act as incident commander during incidents.
Testify and represent the University as required at judicial proceedings called by proper authorities including, but not limited to State, County and local court authorities, and University authorized investigations or hearings.
Conduct criminal/policy investigations and report to proper authorities. Prepared required departmental reports and records.
Conduct assigned patrol duties either on foot, bike or motor vehicle; enforce vehicular traffic and parking regulations; provide traffic and crowd control duties at campus events.
Patrol buildings and grounds as assigned for the purpose of security, safety and order, including providing emergency assistance and protection, reporting hazardous conditions and potential fire problems.
Provide safety/security assistance to guests, students, employees, and members of the monastic community.
Respond to all fire calls, medical emergencies, traffic caused incidents, breaches of security, criminal complaints and calls for assistance to provide necessary aid and assistance.
Attend all required meetings and training sessions.
Serve as back-up dispatcher when needed.
