Job Description:
Northrop Grumman is in need of a Tool Designer to work at its TPG location near Elk River, Minnesota. **Job Summary:** Plan, design, and document complex tools and assemblies using CAD software. Creo preferred. Design alterations to adapt old equipment to new uses. Essential Job Function and Responsibilities: • Design tools, mechanisms, special machine tools following directions and suggestions using CAD. • Create designs and drawings to be sent out for fabrication. • Requires knowledge of mechanics and application of mechanical movements. • Adapt standard equipment to special purposes. • Work independently to solve problems and crate new designs, generally with little guidance. • Select materials to be used, within limits of standard practice. • Determine proper locating points of part for accurate machining and maintenance of required tolerances. • Responsible for correctness of proportions, consideration of stresses, specs, weight, and other details. • Plan and layout a sequence of machining, fitting and assembly operations to produce workable parts. • Change design to meet shop requests, and may make alterations when in process to correct shop errors. • Supervise test of new design if necessary. • Must be familiar with ergonomics and with applicable OSHA safety standards relative to pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical circuits. • May work with engineering and computer aided design (CAD), drawing board and instruments, handbooks etc. • Collaborates with engineering, technicians and management to design the best possible devices. **Competencies:** • Customer Service • Advanced computer skills • CAD experience • Strong time management skills • Attention to detail • Effective communication skills • Continuous improvement • Complex measuring and mathematics skills • Cognitive ability to see how parts interact **Work environment and physical and mental demands:** • Required to direct installation of equipment in assembly buildings. • Considerable amount of time standing and walking, up to 50% of time. **Qualifications:** **Job Requirements:** • Technical or Associate's Degree in Mechanical Drafting/Design. • 6+ years prior related experience in the design, complicated tools and assemblies using CAD software. Creo preferred but Solid Works, AutoCAD or equivalent ok. • 6+ years' experience creating drawings to be used in fabrication following industry and corporate drafting standards. • Must be a US citizen • Must be able to obtain a secret clearance • Possess an understanding of geometric dimensioning and toleranceing. • Design for manufacturing understanding • Experience in machine shop practices principles of mechanics and application of mechanical movements, • Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of various grades of steel and how to harden, temper and stress relieve to achieve required properties. • Knowledge of the working qualities and strength of various metals. • Must be knowledgeable the following design areas: Dies, Molds, Gaging, cutting tools, fixtures, Machine design, Electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic control circuits, or Electronics. • Understand various treatments and processes applied to allow steels to be capable of specifying proper process to produce any desired type of steel hardness. • Good drafting skills and knowledge of drafting standards **Preferred Qualifications:** • Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of various grades of steel and how to harden, temper and stress relieve to achieve required properties. • Knowledge of the working qualities and strength of various metals. Must be knowledgeable the following design areas: Dies, Molds, Gaging, cutting tools, fixtures,Machine design, Electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic control circuits, or electronics. This is a union position. This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location.
